Is Mercury Retrograde?

I woke up this morning to find that all four of my email accounts had vanished from my smartphone and I could not get a data connection, even though my simple pre-paid phone showed that element just fine.

Then Facebook lost two of three comments I made this morning and one post. The last time I tried to make a post, the whole site disapeared from my browser and I had to open a new tab and load it again. Fortunately, FB is limited space communication, so it was easy to re-type the lost bits. However, here on LJ I lost a lengthy comment made in response to someone else's deeply personal story, and I just couldn't re-create it.

Meanwhile, I've called FormerMyCo for help with my phone. First call, I ended up accidentally disconnecting when I tried to use the speakerphone on my secondary phone, so I had to call back. Then, after taking off the back of my smartphone and removing the battery, the tech and I had a major misunderstanding which resulted in me thinking the pre-installed memory card was missing. I cleared my entire desk, emptied my recycling bag and spend long minutes on the floor on my knees before we figured out that I was looking at the wrong thing, and the card was still safely installed.

After forty minutes or so of troubleshooting and still not getting a connection, he had me do a hard reset of my phone, thus erasing all my personalized settings and my downloaded applications. I did not want to do this, because whenever I had to do this with my previous phone it never solved the problem. Sure enough, it didn't solve this problem either. (Fortunately my apps can be re-downloaded, although all the passwords in my security vault will have to be looked up and re-entered.) Tech guy swore to me that on every other phone of my model that he's had to re-set, it has fixed the problem.

Next step is for me to go to the closest FormerMyCo retail location and have them transfer all my data to a new SIM card and see if that works. If not, I'll need a new phone. Fortunately, I did invest in a protection plan.

This is not how I had planned to spend my morning.

I'm going to be very, very careful with all my words and technology today.
It's very rare for me to have this many malfunctions in such a short time.

ETA And after all this -- my phone just started working again. I don't know if that would have happened anyway or if the hard re-set had anything to do with it -- but it happened more than an hour after the reset was done. So all that time, and the inconvenience of re-formatting everything might well have been for nothing.
