My Baby Geek is Growing Up!

This afternoon Wolfling started pacing around our smallish apartment muttering to herself. When asked the cause of her ponder, she replied that she was trying to figure out which plot to pursue. Several minutes later I managed to draw out the information that she is preparing to run her first D&D campaign for her friends, to be launched once summer vacation starts.

I immediately dug into my still-disordered bookshelves until I found my copy of "Game Mastering Secrets" which was very helpful to me when I started working on my own first campaign. It should help her put some order on her wild creativity.

Wolfling is a passionate D&D player, and believes -- she told me with pride -- she "has most of the Players Handbook memorized." I'm sure that one day she's going to be a very good GM.

Yes. . . But I'm sworn to secrecy about the path I had to take and the trials I had to overcome in order to gain a copy for myself!

I firmly believe that GMing is something into which one is born, not made. There are some people who will always just be fantastic GMs, no matter what system they play, no matter how long they've been playing; there are some who will be horrible at it, but excellent players; there are very few that are both, but they also exist.

Then, there's some who will play no matter what, will try to GM and will try to be players, and will suck horribly at both, and will never get the hint, and yet these are very often the people who choose to define themselves as gamers and nothing more...tragic, really.

It's been ages since I've played D&D, and almost two years since I've played anything at all...I do miss it...

Just watch, she'll end up in a sekrit black wiccan cult, saying Blackleaf had to die BECAUSE SHE IS WEAK. And that the better her character is, the more powar she will get!

.. Man. I love that Chick tract. Lol!

I recommend Robin's Laws. Great, great book. Key lesson--interrogate your players on what they want and make sure the planned adventure delivers the good bits for everyone.

w00t!! Power to the DMs!! I'm actually putting together a campaign myself. It's a very small group at the moment, just me and my three players, and it's all women.
